Her latest project, still ongoing, pushes the joke into a new, physical realm. Prodded by a knitter on the knitting forum Ravelry, Shane trained a type of neural network on a series of over 500 sets of knitting instructions. Then, she generated new instructions, which members of the Ravelry community have actually attempted to knit.
Foraminotomy is an operation that “cleans out” or enlarges the bony hole (foramen) where a nerve root exits the spinal canal. Bulging discs or joints thickened with age can cause of the space through which the spinal nerve exits and can press on the nerve, resulting in pain, numbness, and weakness in an arm or leg. Small pieces of bone over the nerve are removed through a small slit, allowing the surgeon to cut away the blockage and relieve pressure on the nerve.
If you work in an office setting, chances are you spend the majority of your day sitting in an office chair that doesn’t provide the best support for your back. As a result, you can leave work each day with an achy back and restless legs. Adding a lumbar support pillow to your chair can provide your back with the support you need to maintain good posture, maintain proper circulation and prevent muscle fatigue.
I recently started working from home more often and realized that my home desk chair isn’t the most supportive. My back was starting to bother me. I purchased this support and added it to my chair. Now my posture is much better and my back doesn’t hurt anymore. It’s just a simple mesh device but it stays put and doesn’t move around on my chair. It’s also kind of flexible so it’s not overly rigid or hard behind my back. Overall a great product which I am glad to have bought.
2015 — Science update: Added discussion of a popular acupuncture-for-back-pain paper, Cherkin 2009. Which is not fit to line a birdcage, in my opinion. [Section: The fascinating case of acupuncture, formerly a contender in low back pain therapy, but which has now miserably failed well-designed scientific tests.]

There are many causes of back pain, including blood vessels, internal organs, infections, mechanical, and autoimmune causes. The spinal cord, nerve roots, vertebral column, and muscles around the spine can all be sources of back pain. The anterior ligaments of the intervertebral disc are extremely sensitive, and even the slightest injury can cause significant pain. In osteoporosis, the bones become weaker and can develop small cracks, or fractures, in the bones, resulting in pain. Arthritis in the joints of the back can also result in discomfort. The synovial joints of the spine (e.g. zygapophysial joints/facet joints) have been identified as the primary source of the pain in approximately one third of people with chronic low back pain, and in most people with neck pain following whiplash.

A traumatic injury, such as from playing sports, car accidents, or a fall can injure tendons, ligaments or muscle resulting in low back pain. Traumatic injury may also cause the spine to become overly compressed, which in turn can cause an intervertebral disc to rupture or herniate, exerting pressure on any of the nerves rooted to the spinal cord. When spinal nerves become compressed and irritated, back pain and sciatica may result.
This is a common misconception with back supports in general. A back support cushion just provides support and promotes good posture, ridding you of the bad sitting habits. It does not weaken muscles but supports over-exerted ones while helping you strengthen weaker ones by making you sit up straighter.
