Mechanical pain. By far the most common cause of lower back pain, mechanical pain (axial pain) is pain primarily from the muscles, ligaments, joints (facet joints, sacroiliac joints), or bones in and around the spine. This type of pain tends to be localized to the lower back, buttocks, and sometimes the top of the legs. It is usually influenced by loading the spine and may feel different based on motion (forward/backward/twisting), activity, standing, sitting, or resting.

The bottom line is that painkillers always come with risks. Unfortunately, if you consult your conventional physician about your chronic back pain, he will often prescribe a long-term treatment plan that may include anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants and possibly other types of pain medication or even anti-seizure drugs – a poisonous chemical cocktail that will put your health at severe risk!

I’ve previously recommended standing up and doing some exercises at your desk to counteract the negative effects of sitting. But after my discussion with Dr. James Levine, author of Get Up!: Why Your Chair Is Killing You and What You Can Do About It, I’m convinced that standing for 10 minutes for every hour of sitting is really the bare minimum, BUT it’s still far from ideal. What I was doing wasn’t enough; In fact, I really believe the answer is to stand up as much as possible.

I would have given 5 starts but the strap to hold it in place is pretty much useless unless you using it for a low back office chair. I ended up using a bungee cord to hold it in place in my postal truck which works pretty well. For the extra price of this product compared to others it would be nice for it to come with an adjustable strap. If the strap was adjustable, perhaps made with velcro so you could wrap it around different size chairs then I’d give it 5 stars.

Plain X-rays are generally not considered useful in the evaluation of acute back pain, particularly in the first 30 days. In the absence of red flags, their use is discouraged. Their use is indicated if there is significant trauma, mild trauma in those older than 50 years of age, people with osteoporosis, and those with prolonged steroid use. Herbal medicines, as a whole, are poorly supported by evidence.[88] The herbal treatments Devil’s claw and white willow may reduce the number of individuals reporting high levels of pain; however, for those taking pain relievers, this difference is not significant.[17] Capsicum, in the form of either a gel or a plaster cast, has been found to reduce pain and increase function.[17]

NINDS-funded studies are contributing to a better understanding of why some people with acute low back pain recover fully while others go on to develop chronic low back pain. Brain imaging studies suggest that people with chronic low back pain have changes in brain structure and function. In one study, people with subacute back pain were followed for one year. Researchers found that certain patterns of functional connectivity across brain networks correlated with the likelihood of pain becoming chronic. The findings suggest that such patterns may help predict who is most likely to transition from subacute to chronic back pain. Other research seeks to determine the role of brain circuits important for emotional and motivational learning and memory in this transition, in order to identify new preventive interventions.
