2017 — Major update: Rewritten and updated. I revisited all the evidence on massage for back pain, especially integrating Furlan et al (a major 2015 meta-analysis on this topic). The bottom line is now that the science is inconclusive and discouraging instead of optimistic. Sorry, everyone. [Section: The evidence for massaging back pain.]

An osteopath – the osteopathic approach also diagnoses by touching and a visual inspection. Osteopathy involves slow and rhythmic stretching (mobilization), pressure or indirect techniques and manipulations on joints and muscles.
The lower back where most back pain occurs includes the five vertebrae (referred to as L1-L5) in the lumbar region, which supports much of the weight of the upper body. The spaces between the vertebrae are maintained by round, rubbery pads called intervertebral discs that act like shock absorbers throughout the spinal column to cushion the bones as the body moves. Bands of tissue known as ligaments hold the vertebrae in place, and tendons attach the muscles to the spinal column. Thirty-one pairs of nerves are rooted to the spinal cord and they control body movements and transmit signals from the body to the brain.
Raise Yourself to a More Restful Sleep Do you fold your pillow trying to make it taller and raise yourself up off the bed? How about pillow stacking, only to have them slip and shift and never quite sit right? When you try to read in bed, … more
You’d think so. But consider this story of a motorcycle accident: many years ago, a friend hit a car that had pulled out from a side street. He flew over the car & landed on his head. Bystanders showed their ignorance of spinal fracture by, yikes, carelessly moving him. In fact, his thoracic spine was significantly fractured … yet the hospital actually refused to do an X-ray because he had no obvious symptoms of a spinal fracture. Incredible! The next day, a horrified orthopedic surgeon ordered an X-ray immediately, confirming the fracture & quite possibly saved him from paralysis.
Lying down minimizes stress on the lumbar spine; however, staying sedentary for more than a day or two can actually prolong and worsen pain. In a new study from Sweden, back pain sufferers who remained active recovered more quickly and felt less depressed than those who took it easy. Low-impact activities like walking and swimming boost blood flow to back muscles while relieving pain and stiffness, Dr. Venesy says. Yoga, with its emphasis on stretching and strengthening, may be one of the most effective spine soothers. After three months of weekly sessions, 60 percent of back-pain sufferers who participated in an Archives of Internal Medicine study reported less discomfort, and 40 percent were able to cut back on pain meds.
To learn more about the dangers of too much sitting and the importance of regularly getting out of your chair, I recommend you to see my interview with Dr. Joan Vernikos, author of Sitting Kills, Moving Heals and former director of NASA’s Life Sciences Division. Dr. Vernikos, who was one of the primary doctors that ensured the health of the astronauts as they went into space, gives a very intensive explanation on how you can simply and easily counteract the ill effects of sitting.
The lumbar region is simply the lower section of your back, also called the lower spine. It has a natural curve that bends slightly inward. This curvature, coupled with sedentary lifestyles and poor posture, mean many people slouch in their seats—forcing the lumbar outward and causing lower back pain. Over time, this pain can become chronic.

Orthopedic surgeons (especially American ones) profit handsomely from the most complex low back surgeries (especially spinal fusion), so they are strongly inclined to think of back pain as a mechanical problem in need of physical repair — in spite of piles of scientific evidence to the contrary. If all you have is an incredibly profitable hammer …
For people with a herniated disc, adopting a curled-up fetal position may bring relief during the night. This is because lying on the side with the knees tucked into the chest reduces bending of the spine and helps open up the joints.

A lumbar support is a device that offers support to this section of the back, much like an orthotic does for the soul of your feet. A lumbar support comes in many shapes and sizes depending on where and how you hope to use it.
In most episodes of low back pain, a specific underlying cause is not identified or even looked for, with the pain believed to be due to mechanical problems such as muscle or joint strain. If the pain does not go away with conservative treatment or if it is accompanied by red flags such as unexplained weight loss, fever, or significant problems with feeling or movement, further testing may be needed to look for a serious underlying problem. In most cases, imaging tools such as X-ray computed tomography are not useful and carry their own risks. Despite this, the use of imaging in low back pain has increased. Some low back pain is caused by damaged intervertebral discs, and the straight leg raise test is useful to identify this cause. In those with chronic pain, the pain processing system may malfunction, causing large amounts of pain in response to non-serious events.
