Register Log In Our Board of Directors To paraphrase Forrest Gump, lower back pain is like a box of chocolates: You never know what you’re going to get. This kind of pain can be sharp and stabbing, dull and achy, or even radiate into other parts of your body. It can last for a few hours, months, or years. Unfortunately, it also happens to be shockingly common—great when you’re talking about chocolate, not so much when you’re discussing pain.

Cauda equina syndrome is a particularly serious type of nerve root problem. This is a rare disorder where the nerves at the very bottom of the spinal cord are pressed on. This syndrome can cause low back pain plus problems with bowel and bladder function (usually unable to pass urine), numbness in the saddle area (around the back passage (anus)) and weakness in one or both legs. This syndrome needs urgent treatment to prevent the nerves to the bladder and bowel from becoming permanently damaged. See a doctor immediately if you suspect cauda equina syndrome.

Mental health factors: Pre-existing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression can influence how closely one focuses on their pain as well as their perception of its severity. Pain that becomes chronic also can contribute to the development of such psychological factors. Stress can affect the body in numerous ways, including causing muscle tension.
If your lower back hurts the day after you exercise, it could be delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This kind of post-workout pain happens as a normal result of your body repairing muscle fibers you tear during exercise. It typically sets in 12 to 24 hours after you’ve exercised and lasts for a maximum of 72 hours, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. But if your pain lasts beyond that or is more extreme than your usual post-exercise soreness, your workout could be doing your back more harm than good.

In some people, no cause can be detected. In others, the cause may be a herniated disk, irregular projections of bone due to osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, or swelling due to a sprained ligament. Rarely, Paget disease of bone, nerve damage due to diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), a tumor, or an accumulation of blood (hematoma) or pus (abscess) pressing on the nerve causes sciatica. Some people seem to be prone to sciatica.
Bed & Bath Sale History of intravenous drug use Recurrences of low back pain are common. Studies have shown recurrence rates between 30% and 75% within 3 years of the first episode. A Canadian study showed the highest recurrence rate among nurses and truck drivers and the lowest among office workers.26 Another Canadian study compared two interventions in the rehabilitation of workers who had missed 4 weeks of work. Patients were randomized to occupational intervention (occupational physician, ergonomist, and employer working to improve the work environment and the patient’s relation to it) or to clinical intervention (back pain specialist, back school, and functional rehabilitation after 12 weeks off work). The patients fared much better with the occupational intervention.27

A complete medical history and physical exam can usually identify any serious conditions that may be causing the pain. During the exam, a health care provider will ask about the onset, site, and severity of the pain; duration of symptoms and any limitations in movement; and history of previous episodes or any health conditions that might be related to the pain. Along with a thorough back examination, neurologic tests are conducted to determine the cause of pain and appropriate treatment. The cause of chronic lower back pain is often difficult to determine even after a thorough examination.

Acute spine pain is very common, and the likelihood of spontaneous recovery is in the range of 80% to 90%. Prolonged inactivity prolongs recovery. Because there is seldom a recognizable structural cause, treatment regimens tend to be nonspecific.

Electrodiagnostic testing may be of value in the assessment of patients with postsurgical deficits, multisegmental neurologic deficits, or multilevel intraspinal structural changes. Such patients present with complicated clinical and neuroimaging evidence, and electrodiagnostic testing might clarify issues of the location, activity, and severity of spinal nerve root disease.
Welcome to Lowe’s Barstools Contents [Show] Vases & Vase Fillers About 9 in 10 cases of nerve root back pain are due to a prolapsed disc – often called a slipped disc. (A disc does not actually slip. What happens is that part of the inner softer part of the disc bulges out (prolapses) through a weakness in the outer harder part of the disc. The prolapsed part of the disc can press on a nerve nearby. See separate leaflet called Slipped (Prolapsed) Disc for details.) Other less common conditions can cause pressure on a nerve to cause nerve root pain.
Back muscle strain Home Myofascial pain is characterized by pain and tenderness over localized areas (trigger points), loss of range of motion in the involved muscle groups, and pain radiating in a characteristic distribution but restricted to a peripheral nerve. Relief of pain is often reported when the involved muscle group is stretched.
