Table & Task Lamps Create a Registry Learn More: Wedding Registry Learn More: Baby Registry Registry Benefits Low back pain can best be described in terms of specific accompanying features. Low back pain is acute if it has a duration of about 1 month or less. Chronic low back pain is usually defined by symptoms of two months or more. Both acute and chronic low back pain can be further defined by the presence or absence of neurologic symptoms and signs. Nonspecific or nonradicular low back pain is not associated with neurologic symptoms or signs. In general, the pain is localized to the spine or paraspinal regions (or both) and does not radiate into the leg. In general, nonspecific low back pain is not associated with spinal nerve root compression. Nonspecific low back pain might or might not be associated with significant pathology on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and is often a result of simple soft tissue disorders such as strain, but it can also be caused by serious medical disorders arising in the bony spine, parameningeal, or retroperitoneal regions. See Table 1 for the differential diagnosis for low back pain.

Item # 753023 Model # AF09713A Find A Doctor By Tina Donvito Electrodiagnostic tests assess the neurophysiologic function of peripheral nerves and can identify the presence of various forms of nerve fiber damage. Electrodiagnostic tests (nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography [EMG]) are most useful in the presence of a motor deficit on neurologic examination. Nerve conduction studies are indicated primarily to exclude other neuromuscular disorders that can mimic radiculopathy, such as peripheral polyneuropathy and mononeuropathies. The H-reflex can be a useful nerve conduction study when assessing for the presence of an S1 radiculopathy. The needle electrode examination is most likely to be useful in the presence of clinical weakness. This procedure will help distinguish weakness due to spinal nerve root damage from other causes of weakness identified on the physical examination, such as other neuromuscular disorders, central nervous system disorders, and non-neurologic causes of weakness (pain, malingering). The needle electrode examination should be performed only after at least 3 weeks have passed since the onset of weakness because fibrillation potentials (the major manifestation of acute denervation) do not reliably develop before that time.

Design Library If a herniated disk is causing relentless or chronic sciatica, weakness, loss of sensation, or loss of bladder and bowel control, surgical removal of the disk (diskectomy) and sometimes part of the vertebra (laminectomy) may be necessary. A general anesthetic is usually required. The hospital stay is usually 1 or 2 days. Often, microsurgical techniques, with a small incision and regional spinal anesthesia (which numbs only a specific part of the body), can be used to remove the herniated portion of the disk. Hospitalization for this procedure is usually not required. After either procedure, most people can resume all of their activities in 6 weeks to 3 months. Surgery tends to result in faster recovery than treatment without surgery; however, after about a year or two, people treated with and without surgery have about the same degree of recovery.

While the culprit of this ailment isn’t always running related, there are a number of potential links.

Angela Merkel Lowe’s Suppliers A complete medical history and physical exam can usually identify any serious conditions that may be causing the pain. During the exam, a health care provider will ask about the onset, site, and severity of the pain; duration of symptoms and any limitations in movement; and history of previous episodes or any health conditions that might be related to the pain. Along with a thorough back examination, neurologic tests are conducted to determine the cause of pain and appropriate treatment. The cause of chronic lower back pain is often difficult to determine even after a thorough examination.

Weak back and abdominal muscles may not properly support the spine. “Weekend warriors”—people who go out and exercise a lot after being inactive all week—are more likely to suffer painful back injuries than people who make moderate physical activity a daily habit. Studies show that low-impact aerobic exercise is beneficial for the maintaining the integrity of intervertebral discs.

Edition: ENGLISH Indoor Fabric Animation 2 Depending on what the doctor suspects is wrong with you, the doctor may perform an abdominal examination, a pelvic examination, or a rectal examination. These exams look for diseases that can cause pain referred to your back. The lowest nerves in your spinal cord serve the sensory area and muscles of the rectum, and damage to these nerves can result in inability to control urination and defecation. Thus, a rectal examination is essential to make sure that you do not have nerve damage in this area of your body.
